A New Era of Innovation in Western Visayas
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), in partnership with Makerlab Electronics and West Visayas State University (WVSU), officially launched the Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMCen) Western Visayas in Iloilo.
Held at the WVSU campus, this milestone event also featured a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing between DOST, WVSU, and Makerlab—paving the way for stronger collaborations in research, innovation, and advanced manufacturing solutions for the region.
What is AMCen?
The Advanced Manufacturing Center (AMCen) is DOST’s flagship initiative to bring 3D printing, advanced materials development, and rapid prototyping technologies closer to communities and industries across the Philippines.
Originally established in Metro Manila, AMCen is now expanding through regional centers. These facilities are designed to serve as hubs where students, researchers, and MSMEs can access cutting-edge tools and training for product design, prototyping, and innovation.
By bringing AMCen to Western Visayas, DOST ensures that access to these technologies is not limited to Luzon but spread across regions where they can spark inclusive growth.
Why Western Visayas?
Western Visayas, home to a vibrant mix of academic institutions and industries, is a strategic location for AMCen. Hosting the center at West Visayas State University allows for:
-
Integration of advanced manufacturing tools in education and training
-
Easier access for local MSMEs to prototyping and product development services
-
Stronger support for regional research and innovation ecosystems
The MOA Signing: Strengthening Partnerships
During the launch, partners signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to formalize their collaboration.
The MOA ensures that AMCen Western Visayas will operate as a shared space for technology access, skills training, and industry collaboration. With Makerlab Electronics as a partner, the center is set to empower both the academic community and entrepreneurs in the region.
AMCen in the Bigger Picture
Western Visayas is just one of several regional AMCen sites. DOST is establishing these hubs nationwide to:
-
Decentralize access to 3D printing and advanced manufacturing
-
Support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs)
-
Provide opportunities for students and researchers to work on real-world projects
-
Prepare the country for Industry 4.0
This nationwide rollout ensures that more Filipinos can benefit from cutting-edge technology—whether in healthcare, agriculture, or industrial design.
What It Means for the Region
The establishment of AMCen Western Visayas opens doors for:
-
Innovation acceleration – Faster prototyping and testing of ideas
-
Stronger academic partnerships – Integration of advanced tools into the classroom
-
Industry competitiveness – Helping local businesses modernize and thrive
-
Workforce development – Training a new generation of professionals ready for high-tech industries
“We are proud to be part of this step toward building a stronger ecosystem for research, development, and industry in Western Visayas,” said Voltaire Gaviola, Brand Supervisor at Makerlab Electronics.
Moving Forward
With the launch of AMCen Western Visayas, DOST, WVSU, and Makerlab Electronics are setting the stage for a future driven by innovation and collaboration.
This is more than just a facility—it is a commitment to equip Western Visayas with the tools, skills, and opportunities to lead in advanced manufacturing, research, and design.
