A First in Philippine Classrooms: Makerlab’s 3D Scanning Workshop at DLSMHSI
On August 12, 2025, Makerlab Electronics brought a first-of-its-kind 3D scanning workshop to De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute (DLSMHSI) in Dasmariñas, Cavite—turning advanced tools into hands-on learning.
Product Engineer, Ray Judiel Cawas demonstrates 3D scanning software to faculty Participants at De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute.
The session was led by Ray Judiel Cawas and Neil Christian Carpio (Product Engineers) with Jean Faye Santos (Brand Supervisor for Creality) as part of the ongoing Makerlab Academy Alliance (MAA)—a program that partners with schools to introduce students and faculty to emerging technologies that are often not yet included in their curriculum.
While 3D printing workshops are becoming common, 3D scanning remains uncharted territory in most schools. Makerlab set out to change that.
Why 3D Scanning?
A participant scans a colleague’s face using the Creality 3D scanner while the real-time 3D model appears on a laptop screen during Makerlab’s workshop at DLSMHSI.
Industries like healthcare, manufacturing, and design increasingly rely on 3D scanning for precision, speed, and creative workflows. By exposing faculty to these tools, Makerlab helps them prepare lessons and projects that mirror real-world applications their students will meet after graduation.
A Hands-On Experience
Using the Creality Otter 3D scanner, participants learned how to capture detailed digital models of real-world objects. They practiced the complete workflow:
- Scanning with Creality Scan software
- Refining and repairing meshes in Autodesk Meshmixer
The 3D Scanning Challenge
- Participants paired up to scan each other.
- They post-processed their scans to enhance detail and accuracy.
- The most impressive and well-refined 3D model earned a prize.
“The reconstruction and post-editing workshop of the 3D image was my favorite part.”
What Participants Had to Say
Question: Which topic(s) did you find most useful or interesting—and why?
- “The reconstruction and post-editing workshop of the 3D image.”
- “Hands-on with the 3D scanners and post-processing software.”
- “Application of scanner.”
- “Everything.”
- “3D Scanner.”
When asked if any topic needed more explanation, most answered “None” or “No,” with one request for more guidance on Meshmixer—a helpful note for future sessions.
High Satisfaction, Strong Recommendations
Despite being Makerlab’s first-ever 3D scanning workshop—a true pilot—the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Most attendees said they enjoyed the experience and would gladly recommend it to others.
Small Group, Big Impact
The session was originally expected to host more participants from DLSMHSI and Dasmariñas Integrated School. For this pilot, the team capped attendance at 10 participants. The smaller group ensured generous hands-on time with scanners and deeper engagement.
Part of a Bigger Vision
This event is just the beginning. Through the Makerlab Academy Alliance, Makerlab will continue to bring modern tech workshops—from 3D printing to electronics—to schools across the Philippines, free of charge.

What’s Next?
With the success of this first 3D scanning workshop, Makerlab plans to expand to more schools—encouraging students and faculty to explore the possibilities of 3D technology. It’s not just about teaching a tool; it’s about shaping the innovators of tomorrow.
